Incorporating Japanese Décor into your Home

In the midst of all of the modern modalities we rely on, there resides great interest in décor which displays true Japanese flare. The thing about this style of home or office décor is that it is more that beautiful; it is also quite meaningful. Decorator items such as the samurai katana are representative of the moral values characteristic to an ancient society; values such as loyalty and determination, discipline and honor.
The samurai katana, a common sword used in ancient times, is one very popular piece used in Japanese décor. Other samurai swords are also popular, and may be hung on a wall as a piece of art. When you consider how the samurai katana and other swords are crafted, you understand that each piece truly is a piece of art in and of itself. Perhaps its not only the sword, so carefully crafted, that holds value; but the skill one had to acquire to use it. Swords like the samurai katana were weapons used to protect freedom; many times in hand to hand combat. In order to be effective in fighting using a sword, one had to use all faculties such as reflexes and the skills of body and mind.
Swords were of great importance to the Samurai, also called Bushi. A warrior would consider his sword a part of his being, and would take all measures to hold onto it; even if this cost him his life. Samurai katana were often given names and awarded medals after an intense battle. Looking at the sword in this way, it is easy to understand just why they were so valuable during that time and revered even today. Not only are these items still handcrafted to perfection today; but they maintain symbolism of a true warrior. Samurai swords of all types represent the duty, power and ethics of a long ago people.
Using a Samurai katana as a focal point in a Japanese style room makes a powerful and reverent statement. When constructing a room where this décor will rule, consider how and where you can incorporate the sword.
In any room, simplicity speaks louder than a whole slew of decorative items. For an Asian themed room, color plays a large part in creating ambience. The color palette for this style includes earth tones which are subdued; colors such as green, gray, brown, black or tan. However, walls are typically maintained in white or creamy tones; with the darker earth tones present in furnishings and molding. Accessories such as shoji screens, vases, fabrics and live plants bring life and vibrant colors into the space.
One element of Japanese décor that cannot be missed is the tokonoma; a recessed alcove which generates a harmonious environment. In the tokonoma, artwork, plants or scrolls are displayed; often changed up throughout the year. This element of authentic Japanese décor requires a bit of skill and understanding before hopping right in to add it. For the most basic tokonama, consider placing a shoji screen in a corner with a decorative piece showcased in front of it.
With some simple color, a samurai sword and a shoji screen, you can get started incorporating Japanese décor into your home.
